Samira held the frame steady while Astrid deftly detached the various sections of the combat drone with her multitool. Her four hands were perfect for holding the contoured body for the Engineer.
"Oh... I love how these are designed." Astrid muttered softly, a smile played across her face.
Samira grinned, "They sure seem rugged."
Astrid nodded, "Oh, yes... These drones were engineered with actual combat in mind. Notice how the armor plates overlap on the frame?" Samira paid close attention as Astrid pointed out the structural details. "They have about as much protection as T-Fed powered assault armor. There isn't a person crammed in here, so there's plenty of room for sys-coms and weaponry."
Astrid's almond shaped lavender eyes looked up at Samira, her enthusiasm was obvious and infectious and, while Samira watched Astrid lay out each plate, the clever design reminded her of her own heavy armor set. I might never have to wear that armor again... Samira smiled at the thought.
"What's this armor made of?" Samira raised her eyebrow with a curious glance.
Astrid smiled, "Titanium gold alloy... "
Samira blinked, "Gold?"
The Engineer nodded, "Yup... Very tough, Terrans have known about it for centuries..."
"Unfortunately the Terran economy values gold far too much to utilize it this way."
Astrid looked into thin air for a few moments... Samira noticed the blank expression and she assumed it was an indication of her having deep thoughts.
"Oh..." Astrid blinked, "I think I stubbed my mental toe on something."
"How does that work?" Samira smirked.
Astrid giggled, "I'm not sure I can't explain it any better."
"But... Talking about Gold elicited a bunch of weird thoughts."
Samira raised her eyebrow again, "Weird like how?"
Astrid placed the drone armor plate on the workbench, then turned to the wall-com behind her. Her fingers blurred a few moments and the holographic illustration for atomic gold appeared. Astrid stared at it... her eyes drinking in the slowly rotating electrons.
After a few moments Samira walked around the bench and stood behind the seated Engineer and she stared at the hologram as well. "Tell me what you're thinking?" The cyborg Security Chief requested.
Astrid's lips screwed up slightly, "I think I am seeing a piece of a puzzle... or maybe a few words of a riddle."
"Hmmm..." Samira smiled softly, resting her chin on Astrid's shoulder, "sounds like Sorcery to me." She gently kissed Astrids neck.
Astrid looked out of the corner of her eye at her tattooed wife and asked, "Should I let it come to me or hunt it down?"
Samira pursed her full lips, "Oh, I don't think there's a need to chase it."
Astrid turned on her shop stool pulling Samira between her thighs as Samira rubbed her hawkish nose against Astrids while placing two arms across the Engineer's shoulders and two around her waist.
"I suspect the more you work on the drones the easier the discovery will come." Samira smiled.
Astrid gazed into Samira's deep-amber eyes that were gilded in gold. "Working on them got me this first clue, makes sense to keep at it." She bit her lip a moment then stated, "I'm more than a little nervous about getting an Ability."
Samira nodded, "You'll be fine, I'll be right here: Agatha also said she would help if you needed it."
Astrid had bit her lip as she waited for Samira's response, then she looked a bit relieved.
Samira kissed her softly, "I have confidence in you."
Vika lay stretched out on the command couch, her thoughts wandered as she stared at patterns of the bridge ceiling interior. Agatha was at the helm and navigation and shared the command couch with Vika as Max had been called away to Medical.
Apparently Joon had decided she needed some support from the Captain while giving Paula her physical examination. Vika smirked, she could picture it in her mind's eye; Paula's mouth full of Max with Joon knuckles-deep inside her.
Agatha glanced at Vika, "You could just join them, you know."
Vika smirked harder, "Nah... Paula needs time with them."
Agatha thought about that.
"You seem exceedingly wise, is that a byproduct of your Portent?"
Vika pursed her lips in thought as she laced her hands behind her head. Her thick dreads were unbound and they flowed around her muscled arms. "Perhaps," She smiled softly, "But, I don't always know what I am doing."
Agatha tilted her head, "What do you mean?"
Vika smiled softly, "Sometimes, in my dreams, I don't always understand the circumstances."
Agatha's eyebrows raised.
" Like this morning for example..." Vika continued.
Agatha lifted Vika's head gently and slid her thigh under it, fanning out the bright coppery dreads in her lap. Vika's cobalt-blue eyes gazed up at her exotic wife, dropping her freckled arms back, lacing her fingers across her tummy. "My dreams had me sparring with Max and losing... So my choices were different."
Agatha looked concerned, "I sincerely hope I have not ruined your gift."
Vika pouted slightly, "I don't think so, I just didn't see a way to win in my dream. There are a number of new things I need to allow for."
Agatha smiled down at Vika's cute freckled face.
"It may take time to adjust to what you can do, and what is possible."
Vika smiled, and replied. "Yes."
"Will the 'new' disqualify what you have been planning out?" Agatha asked.
"Hmmm." Vika responded, "I'm not sure but perhaps I should be very cautious for a while."
Agatha thought about that while she played with Vika's dreads. Suddenly Agatha asked something in a deep guttural language and Vika beamed a smile, answering in the same language.
"Do you think Teffa will share her kitchen?" Agatha asked softly?
Vika chuckled, "Lakita is a good cook, They could learn a lot from each other."
Agatha tilted her head, then looked into Vika's eyes, "Would you be willing to try something that I have been thinking about?"
"New recipe?" Vika inquired.
Agatha shook her head, "No... I want to 'loan' you one of my Hands on Staverka."
Vika blinked.
"What?" Vika looked shaken.
Agatha smiled and Vika's eyes narrowed.
"I think..." Agatha explained, "If you can take a nap here on my lap, I might be able to slip you into one of my Hands."
Vika's mouth opened in disbelief, "Ohhh kayyy, that sounds like a mad idea waiting for a mild psychotic episode...Lets try it." Vika grinned.
Agatha nodded.
Vika took a deep breath, and let it out slowly as she closed her eyes as Agatha gently put her hand on Vika's chest and closed her own. It only took a couple of minutes for Vika to drop off.
"Mmmmm." Paula moaned around the length of her wife's cock.
She was moving ever so slightly around it, moving from the impacts of her other wife pounding her from behind.
The Medical exam had been swift and efficient, It became obvious pretty quickly that Joon thoroughly enjoyed her newest wife. She was polite and asked Paula if she minded some unprofessional attention after they were done.
Paula replied that she would have no compunction to anything Joon might want to do with her so Joon summoned Max to Medical to 'assist' her in the exhaustive procedures she, in her professional opinion, needed to perform on The Deirdre's newest crew member.
Max arrived with Joons 'toolbelt' and Paula's reaction to the implement had her biting her lower lip with half lidded eyes.
The term 'spit-roasting' was a new one to Max but Joon and Paula were savvy enough to update any of the terminology their Captain-wife's vernacular might lack.
The 'procedure' had started out slow and gentle, but after Paula's enthusiastic encouragement the pace increased dramatically. The toolbelt was a marvel of sex toy technology and Paula approved of it wholeheartedly. She took all of what Joon could dish out, savoring every stroke.
Eventually the phallus was adjusted up to a truly impressive length and girth as it impaled Paula from behind. Whereas they began the 'procedure' in Medical; It was soon moved next door to the Guest cabin and Joon was soon railing Paula in comfort of the accommodating bed found there.
In a final crescendo, Joon and Max gave Paula a double sided orgasm as Max and Joon shared a loving look with Paula climaxing between them. Afterwards, Paula greedily swallowed down the customary vanilla treat she had come to crave. She really did love vanilla; and now even more so.
Max and Joon cuddled up on either side of Paula after she aced the exam and had a soft conversation between spouses, punctuated with kisses. Eventually Max and Joon were alerted by Agatha by a mental message with an ETA to Yh76. They both helped Paula up and the three shared the Guest Cabin shower.
They dried, redressed and descended to the Bridge with minutes to spare.
Joon was the first to notice Vika and Agatha laying oddly together on the command couch. "Oh... That's different." Joon glanced at Max.
The Hand of Agatha at Navigation turned in her seat, "I am lending Vika a Hand on Staverka."
That stopped the new arrivals in their tracks. Max responded, "Excuse me?"
Agatha smiled, "Thirty seconds to Yh76."
"Wait... Vika is doing what?" Paula asked in concern, sitting at the feet of the redhead in question.
"Vika is borrowing one of my Hands on Staverka." Agatha replied.
Max and Joon shared a look. "Oh, that's all..." Joon said, her words dripping with sarcasm.
"Nothing dangerous, or mind bending involved...perfectly normal!" Max finished Joon's sentiment.
Agatha nodded, "I know you both realize I would never put Vika in harm's way..."
Neither Max nor Joon could argue with that, but they both knew Vika was more than adventurous enough to do it even if it were dangerous.
Paula sat there staring at the unconscious Vika, "I am trying to understand exactly what is going on."
At that moment the Terran Corvette Deirdre dropped out of hyper-warp.
Una glanced at Agatha with a goofy grin.
At the common room table the two hands of Agatha were seated, Teffa was also there, coiled down beside it.
Teffa blinked at Una and turned to look at Agatha
"She is quite serious." Agatha verified to the Slarmian Major-domo of the Terran Federation Consulate soon-to-be Embassy.
"It is very different than I thought it would be." Una declared, "It isn't dream-like at all."
Agatha nodded, "I assume you are not in discomfort, I don't sense any distress from you."
Una shook her head negatively, "No." She intoned.
Teffa stared... Agatha had four 'Hands' at this Consulate, but Teffa now knew there were also two on Dau and many more on the Deirdre. The exotic creature that was Agatha was something Teffa could barely fathom. In Teffa's mind she was a being of mythical proportions. Teffa was appreciative of the useful fiction... 'Una, Agatha's twin sister'. It was a useful fiction as it allowed Agatha more face time in the rest of the Consulate without giving herself away.
Teffa folded four arms in front of herself and thought about Vika's presence. This was something very different. Vika was somehow possessing one of Agatha's Hands, it felt very odd. *** "Do Dame Max and Lady Jooniper know you do this?" Teffa asked Agatha softly, trying not to seem terse.
Agatha bit her lip... "...They do now."
Una turned her head to Agatha, "Are they angry?"
"I wouldn't say, 'Angry', but they are concerned." Agatha looked chagrined.
Una smirked uncharacteristically, "I will discuss it with them when I am done here..." Then Una-Vika slid her chair back away from the table and stood up. She turned to go into the kitchen where Lakita was preparing dinner.
Una-Vika took three steps and tripped over her long legs, landing on her face.
Agatha winced... "There may be a period of adjustment." She said softly as Una-Vika rolled over on her back and burst out laughing.
Lakita stood in the tiny kitchen, which probably wasn't fair as everything not made for a Largath was tiny.
Una-Vika and Teffa listened to her tell her tale while she worked. The tale was quietly translated for Teffa though converting from Largatta to Slarmit lost a little in translation, but would suffice for now.
Teffa listened attentively...
It seemed Lakita's new situation was what Logo had planned for her from the beginning. It was not as difficult as they had worried with Lakita being so quickly welcomed. Logo had worried that no one would believe Lakita was known to Jooniper. Or worse, Vika and her new family had vanished without trace.
But Agatha was at the new Consulate. Vika had said she would be many months ago. Everything Vika said would happen, did. Logo loved Vika very much, Lakita did too. The trust they had in Vika's dreams helped not only them, but all Largath.
Convincing Bract to trust them was hard, Logo said. Logo had to learn many, many things so he was good at job. Vika play big part, teach Logo to be best security on Clipper for years. Then they convince Bract that any Largath could learn this and be Best security.
When Logo came home with riches and status that no Largath had ever heard of, Cows and Does threw themselves at Logo. Bulls and Bucks were furious, but instead of fighting, Logo offered them way to get same. "Be Best security." Logo said, "You get treasure and females." So while Vika chose and trained Does for learning to Merchant, Logo trained Bucks and Bulls.
Logo train them to watch well, to never get mad, to follow rules. He show them armor, he show weapons, he show how to see good from bad.
Logo said "Bract are good boss, they treat everyone same, just follow rules." It took a long, long time, and Logo only approve of best learn Largath. Hundreds become best, and they now work for Bract... Getting riches and status.
Now Logo want Best for all Largath, so Bucks and Does can be best at other jobs also. Lakita was best three of Vika choice, Lakita was one with best at learn speak. Logo say Lakita best at calm, so Lakita was sent to learn best diplomacy.-
The Largath stopped talking and looked at her new boss and teacher.
"Lakita wan best tun Larga, wan allum Larga du best." She said softly in tradespeak.
Teffa slithered up to Lakita and put a delicate hand on Lakita's thick forearm. "I believe in you, Lakita, I will do everything I can to help you succeed."
Una-Vika translated and Lakita knelt down then gave Teffa the gentlest of hugs.
Vika fondly remembered Logo's first Terran word... best.
Samira watched the cataloging process Astrid performed. She meticulously scanned every piece, examining them one by one. Samira wondered if Astrid had done the same thing with her at some point.
She bit her lip thinking that it was pretty hot if Astrid had.
Astrid glanced at Samira, noticing the slight blush on her cheeks. The Engineer and the Security Chief shared a smile and after successfully concluding the task, Astrid, with Samira's assistance, reassembled the Combat drone.
Agatha gave them an ETA over the comlink through their wetware and in a small celebration of a job well done, the Chiefs engaged in a loving embrace.
Long slow deep kisses and wandering hands over soft curves.
At that moment they both felt the ship accelerate after coming out of hyper-warp for it seems the human tummy was perfectly designed to detect that particular transition even with inertial dampeners.
"We should head to the bridge..." Samira said softly, her eyes still closed. Astrid sighed softly, "Mmmm... Oh, I guess... I hope we can pick this up later."
Beautiful golden and lavender eyes met.
"Count on it." Samira smiled.
Astrid nodded, taking Samira by a hand leading her into the corridor and the Chiefs of The Deirdre walked hand in hand to the bridge.
When they stepped onto the bridge, the first thing they noticed was Max sitting on the deck. Dame Captain Max Anders was sitting in front of the command couch with Joon behind her, thin legs draped over broad shoulders. Sitting next to Joon on the couch was Agatha with Vika's head in her lap...They both seemed to be asleep.
Paula had Vika's legs in her own lap... she turned her head and greeted them which alerted Joon and Max to their presence on the bridge.
"Is Vika okay?" Astrid looked concerned.
Agatha sitting at Navigation turned in her seat, "She's fine... I am conducting an experiment."
This declaration immediately piqued Astrid's interest, Samira however, narrowed her eyes.
"Is it safe to be conducting experiments on the bridge?" Samira inquired.
Max nodded to Agatha, who rolled her eyes playfully. "Okay, Captain, I owe you a beer."
Joon giggled, then explained it to Astrid who looked confused, "Max bet Agatha a beer that Samira would comment on the 'safety' of the experiment."
Astrid smiled at Samira.
Samira nodded to Max, "That was a safe bet, no pun intended."
Everyone giggled.
Holo displays came alive as Deirdre's sensitive passive array faithfully reported a small blue star with a single gas giant swarming with moons. Deirdre's course was laid in by Agatha, intent on a green dusty smudge leading the gas giant in its orbit.
"So what's the experiment?" Astrid asked, glancing at the unconscious Vika.
Agatha explained as Astrid and Samira went slack jawed.
"Fuckmuffins!" Astrid said quietly.
Samira stared at Agatha, while contemplating what she'd said and Agatha winked in response.
Samira swallowed, "I'm frightened and intrigued at the same time."
Joon added, "I've already requested some 'Loan' time... Y'know, for science."
Soft giggles filled the bridge.
Samira unceremoniously plopped down on the deck in front of the command couch and Astrid followed a moment later, cuddling in behind her. The tiny warship traveled as it's sensors were directed to concentrate on the L4 cloud.
Max pouted slightly as she glanced at Vika's prone form, "I wish she was here to be a tourist guide for us." In that moment Vika inhaled sharply, her eyes blinking open. The Hand of Agatha next to Vika also woke, a smile forming on her face.
"That was fun!" Vika proclaimed.
"You can fill us in on your adventure later, but for now, we need you to guide us." Max requested.
"I actually heard that, eventually Agatha was able to pipe in what was said."
Agatha shared a smile with the diminutive redhead and Vika sat up and stretched. "The Depot is in the cloud, there is a passage through the center of it which is regulated and safe to traverse." Vika rattled off. Vika continued, "The passage is called the Thoroughfare and has two lanes, yellow and red, stay in the yellow lane."
Agatha nodded as they drew closer to the cloud, She pointed out the two beacons located on opposite sides of the cloud. Everyone was monitoring the sensor displays and they witnessed a Bract Clipper departing from the closer beacon.
As The Deirdre approached the beacon to the passage, another ship was traveling the red side of the long illuminated tunnel in the dust towards them. A huge Trankaran freighter emerged, and despite it's slow velocity, it looked to be rocketing out of the Thoroughfare.
As Deirdre maneuvered into the yellow lane, everyone got a mild sensation of claustrophobia. The tunnel in the dust and debris was actually several kilometers across and lights lined it in regular intervals, yet it seemed confining in an odd way. Deirdre's powerful sensors were unable to penetrate deeply into the dust, as the Ship traveled at a sedate velocity down the Thoroughfare.
"What's wrong with the sensors?" Samira asked, staring at her display.
"Nothing." Vika replied, "The dust is metallic, making it difficult for them. There are rocks in there; some very large."
Astrid's eyebrows raised, "That's a nasty natural barrier. The Bract must know their shit."
Max and Samira shared a look.
Paula put her hand on Vika's muscular leg, "Are all the Depots like this one?"
Vika nodded, "Very alike, they are made the same way, only looking different. Logo hates this one; the color makes him nervous."
Joon turned to look at Vika, "Why?"
"It reminds him of deep lakes on Larga." Vika answered.
She concluded, "There are 'Uko' in those lakes...Dragon Turtles."
Paula's lips thinned.
Deirdre continued down the tunnel, massive shadows could be seen in the green dust. Max could see why it might conjure fear in the Largath, giant hungry turtles in those murky depths would give Max nightmares too.
The Thoroughfare was almost a hundred thousand kilometers in length, at the midway point set back from the passage was the Depot. It was a massive horseshoe shaped structure with extensive docks lining the inner edge. The outside edge of the Depot was lined with massive oblong asteroids, they were bound together and to the Depot itself. The towering rocks were positioned lengthwise side by side, offering substantial protection for the Depot. The Depot superstructure reminded Max of a shoreline boardwalk with rocky cliffs as a backdrop.
Max said her impression outloud, most everyone could see it.
"Or like a metropolitan waterfront with it's reflection under it, but it isn't a reflection." Joon voiced.
Max nodded, "That's even better."
The first impression Samira had of the Depot was a dark crown made of fangs.
"I think I prefer Joon's impression more, sorry Sam." Astrid kissed the side of Samira's head.
Samira smiled, "That's okay, I prefer hers too."
Paula simply said, "Stonehenge."
No one else knew what that was, so Agatha brought up a holograph of the ancient Terran site.
That brought a round of nods as the crew saw the resemblance.
The Depot was as busy as Vika had reported, scores of ships were docked all along the Depot, easily a third of which were Clippers.
Vika pointed out three slips where Clippers were in various stages of construction.
"How many Bract live here do you think?" Joon asked no one in particular.
Vika pursed her lips, Paula looked at her. "Tens of thousands," Vika replied, "Likely more."
Paula nodded, "So it's a full fledged colony then."
"Yes." Vika replied with her typical brevity.
As The Deirdre made it's approach, Agatha received a hail followed immediately by docking instructions in Terran and a flightpath. "Very efficient." Agatha commented.
The crew nodded in agreement while they observed the Depot. Free docking was a feature of Bract Depots, unheard of in most civilized cultures. This Bract policy attracted more merchants, thus more revenue than fees would have produced. The far ends of the expansive docks looked to have a few semi-permanent occupants, festooned with cables.
Vika commented that utilities for long term guests were quite reasonable.
The Deirdre slipped into her designated, small sized cradle and powered down. A universal umbilical found the port side airlock and the day crew stood and quit the Bridge together, hurrying to the CQ to change, anxious to explore the Depot.
Teffa studied the Slarmian on the screen, she wasn't sure how she felt about him. Durx had led the assault on the Consulate, her responsibility, her home. She should have wanted him dead, but for some reason she didn't.
There was something about him, he seemed out of sorts, like he realized he'd been used. Yet, he didn't lash out at his captors, he was polite, determined to face his fate with dignity. She had watched Agatha bring him his meal, the Largath style stew was hearty and filling. He seemed wary of Agatha, but ate the stew without hesitation.
There was a strength about him, a confidence that belied his situation. Teffa couldn't help but admire that.
She was coiled down in front of the bank of monitors in the security room. In a chair next to her sat Agatha, the First Secretary observed the Major-domo.
"You find him attractive."
Teffa's yellow eyes bulged and she sputtered, "That's ridiculas, he's a criminal!"
Agatha nodded, "He is... That doesn't mean he can't be attractive."
Teffa blinked at Agatha.
"What about him do you like?" Agatha asked with genuine curiosity.
"Ah, uh..." Teffa fumbled, she blinked rapidly in embarrassment.
The Slarmian in question was older, rustic and had a stoicism about him that was rarely seen in Staverka's large capital city. "He's... Like a feral Nessil." Teffa looked flustered as she named the large scaled predator found in the remote jungles.
They were known to stalk prey for days and ambush them.
Teffa looked back at the monitor, "I imagine he is patient and unwavering."
Agatha nodded, "Indeed... Pursuing him may be difficult as I do not think he will be available long, but for now, you can observe him all you like."
Teffa looked down at her four hands; she was shaking. "I don't know why I am feeling this way." She looked up again at Agatha.
Agatha smiled softly, "A wise person once told me, sometimes good people do bad things, and bad people do good things, you should judge a person by what they have done, but try adding the reasons for why they do them, also."
Teffa's eyes grew large at the words, "Who told you that?"
Agatha looked up at the monitor and smiled, "My wife."
"I... Envy you, Agatha." Teffa whispered, turning her yellow eyes back to the monitor.
"I hope someday to have a spouse of such quality."
Agatha smiled again, "Of that I have no doubt, dear Teffa, no doubt at all."
They both refocused their gaze upon the Slarmian. Agatha would try to keep Teffa from any harm, though her fascination with Durx was an interesting development.
"Have you seen his file?" Agatha inquired.
Teffa blinked, "I have not... May I?"
"Of course you may." Agatha smiled.
The crew wore their usual adventuring clothes. Max was in her Midnight-black, Joon in her Mahogany and Forest-green. Paula wore T-Fed Greys, Vika donned baggy denim shorts and flannel. Astrid wore a Deep-violet office ensemble, and Samira dressed in her embroidered Grey tabard.
Of course Agatha and 'Una' were in her Deadly Schoolgirl uniforms.
Everyone was comfortable and ready for adventure.
They made their way down the well worn gantry and simple signs directed them to a pair of moving walkways. The two tracks allowed for a sedate yet steady conveyance to and from the reception area centered in the docks.
It was broad enough for freight, and slow enough for anyone to utilize without injury. Widely spaced grab rails allowed beings that needed them to keep steady. It was a long ride, but because everything was new to them it didn't seem too bad. Upon arrival they were greeted with an open dock front dotted with the occasional seating area with an expansive crystoplast view.
The scenery wasn't quite a spectacular one, it did have a certain allure though as dusty formations beyond the Depots perimeter mixed the different shades of green in soothing patterns. The blue star Yh76 was bright enough to cast shadows of unseen rocks through the dust across the cove of Depot 03.
Joon likened it to foggy mornings in the woods on Jericho and Paula and Astrid thought that the view was serene.
The Depot was utilitarian in design, with a dark superstructure indistinguishable from their Clippers; although it did boast decorations commonly used by all of the other members of the ME so the feel of the docks changed gradually, allowing for some measure of comfort for many preferences.
Joon was impressed by the display of thoughtfulness while Max got the impression that all travelers were welcome, but violence would not be tolerated. Several Largath pairs in full combat armor clearly marked as security stood near and around the visitors center. Max glanced at Vika who smiled at the sighting.
Joon shared a look with Max. "I didn't realize Largath were so prevalent in the ME." Joon said to no one in particular.
Vika shared a look with her, "Bract now employ more Largath than anyone else in the ME."
Samira nodded in approval after giving one pair a good look.
Joon raised an eyebrow, "I assume by your response this is a recent development?"
Vika smiled, "Yes."
Max sized up the closest Largath security, he was well over ten feet and easily weighed half a metric ton. Tactical armor worn by the security fit well and offered excellent protection without severely hindering movement. Even without weapons Largath were lethal; and every one of them carried the same oversized firearm.
Massive automatic shotguns with high-capacity box magazines. The custom manufactured weapons were on tac slings, ready to be employed in a moment's notice. It was obvious that a great deal of thought, effort and investment went into that oversized equipment.
The way the Largath held themselves with four eyes casually watching everyone without a hint of intimidation, indicated they were also extremely well trained. Largath had a very ugly reputation, it was encouraging to see them working in a better light.
Imagining anyone foolish enough to start trouble at this Depot was incredibly difficult.
The crew of the Deirdre walked from the conveyance system to the visitor center. There they approached one of the Bract behind a long polished counter. "Greetings, welcome to Depot Zero Three, my name is Elvis. How may I help you today?"
Astrid shared a look with Joon, they both mouthed. "Elvis"
Vika smirked at the reaction. Elvis was representative of his species, a heavy dark brown rounded chitinous shell, six limbs topped with compound eyes and short club-like antennae.
Articulate phalanges adorned the uppermost limb pair, the four remaining were left to mobility and a very sturdy stance.
Bract quadripod movement gave them a shorter stature compared to other sentient species; they seemed completely unbothered by that fact.
Joon stepped up to the counter pulling Vika up with her. She immediately deferred to Vika who gave her a side-eyed look. "Terran ship Deirdre." Vika said, she then spelled out the name.
Elvis nodded politely, tapping out the information behind the counter.
"Does Deirdre have an account with us?" the Bract asked.
"We'll use mine." Vika responded.
Elvis refocused on Vika as an input built into the counter was revealed by a recessed panel. Vika immediately tapped in her code and brought up her Bract Conglomerate employee account. The display was not in Terran, so Joon didn't understand the nomenclature. After a few moments the antennae on Elvis vibrated.
"Oh, thank you, Vika... It's so nice to welcome you again to the Bract Conglomerate." Elvis seemed pleased, "Will you be reactivating your employment status?"
Vika shook her head negatively, "I am requesting a diplomatic account."
"Change your existing account or start an additional account?"
"Additional."
"Commercial or... Governmental?"
"Governmental."
Elvis paused, "My apologies, Vika, I need to forward this request to my superior."
"Yes." Vika nodded, "Thank you, for your time."
"It has been my pleasure, Vika." Elvis' antennae vibrated again.
"If you would please adjourn to the waiting area, an attendant will be with you momentarily."
"Yes, goodbye." Vika nodded.
Vika led her spouses to an area nearby, with a few tables and comfortable bench seating.
"That was instructive." Joon commented as they sat.
Vika shrugged. "Typical."
Paula shared a look with Joon.
Samira and Astrid sat closely together on another broad bench. Astrid held one of Samira's hands, her nervousness apparent. Max sat on a cylindrical cushioned seat, Vika indicated she wanted to sit on Max's lap, so her Captain-wife pulled her onto it with aplomb. Paula and Joon shared another bench smiling at Vika.
Agatha and 'Una' stood on either end of Joon and Paula, adopting a watchful stance.
*Oh nice, bodyguard mode.*
Joon smiled at Agatha.
*Of course... Need to make a good impression. The Largath are watching and they will appreciate the professionalism.*
Agatha winked at Joon.
"So this 'new account' is for Deirdre or Joon?" Paula leveled the question across the table to Vika who was settling into Max's lap.
"We are not there yet, we must follow procedure up the chain." Vika articulated, "It is a process."
Paula pursed her lips, "Okay, I understand."
Max surveyed the area, the docks reminded her of similar Terran facilities. The difference was there were no Terrans in sight, but at least half a dozen species were in evidence. Max also listened to the discussions that erupted between her wives.
"Establishing this account is the path to creating an official relationship with the Conglomerate." Paula stated, Vika nodded in agreement. "How come we have to do it, Terra has known Bract for hundreds of years, everyone has." Joon countered.
"We know them in commerce, yes." Paula confirmed.
"Bract have been interacting with us for centuries on an intentionally restricted basis."
Joon blinked, "Seriously?"
Paula nodded, "It's sad really, because Terran corporations have, on literally hundreds of occasions, blocked any broad national agreements with them."
"Keeping profit shares off the table." Paula's lips thinned.
Joon's jaw dropped, "Those greedy fuckers!"
"Corporations hold a great deal of power and influence within the Terran sphere, along with the xenophobia that has been stoked seemingly forever; so they've allways gotten away with it."
Paula sighed, "According to my research, this will be the first time a Terran diplomat has approached the Bract who wasn't bound to or sponsored by a Terran corporate entity."
"Fuckmuffins! This is a really big deal!" Astrid shared her nervousness with the conversation.
Paula nodded to the Engineer.
Max wasn't aware of the permanent corporate blockade, it explained why Bract were not nearly as common in the T-Fed as the nations around it.
"Only specific individual shipping contracts within the Terran Federation are currently available to them." Paula stated morosely.
That revelation pointed directly to the stranglehold the Core had on commerce with the Outer Rim.
"They are bleeding the Colonies, and have been from the beginning." Max said quietly.
Depot Zero Three was the closest Major Bract Depot to the Terran Federation border, they were in the right place... But, It appeared they had their work cut out for them. Max sighed trying to figure out how to plan around centuries of deplorable Terran business practices.
*Perhaps we can make use of Admiral Blakes example of positive expectations.*
Max blinked, then shared a look with Joon, who looked like she heard the same suggestion. Joon smiled, "I think we can do a little coattail riding."
At that moment everyone's attention was drawn to a Bract entering the waiting area, he was carrying a thick data pad: Agatha and Una shifted stance.
"Hello, I am looking for Deirdre."
Max answered, "We are Deirdre."
The Bract nodded, "Greetings, my name is Kevin, I need some information for the Diplomatic Governmental Account request with the Bract Conglomerate, do you have a few minutes?"
Ambassador Zess sat mesmerized as the razor sharp knife moved with a precision and speed she could barely follow.
Miku leaned close to her and whispered, "How is she doing that?"
Zess blinked, she shrugged with a smile, "I have no Idea."
The two Dauzakai sat on the tall padded stools that lined the edge of the immense commercial style kitchen that the Ambassador's suite boasted. They watched as two Hands of the Starchild Agatha prepared dinner for them.
Agatha made cooking look like a well choreographed martial art, the pair were in highly coordinated synchronization.
Vegetables were chopped, sauteed, combined with meats that were marinated, spiced and seasoned. With the skills of the best chefs even seen on a holo, Agatha could produce the most amazing dishes with artistic presentation.
Ness, Vess, Miku and Nomissa were treated to Agatha's best culinary efforts and within mere minutes the meal was ready and moved into her Excellency's dining room as Agatha served dinner to the Ambassador and her family.
Agatha didn't sit, but insisted they enjoy the magnificent offering while she served them. Zess wanted to demand Agatha join them, but the Starchild was enjoying herself profusely. They were unaware, but the reactions from the Ambassador's family as they experienced the meal was what Agatha wanted, feeding on the emotions of the group.
It was a primal thing, the enjoyment of delicious sustenance: sharing the same kind of emotional resonance as sexual gratifacation. Those emotional reactions created a similar effect for Agatha which was very satisfying.
Finally after three courses of exquisite food, Agatha served a delicate, delightful dessert.
The Hands Agatha had on Dau were standing just outside the Ambassadors dining room basking in the feelings from her Dauzakai family enjoying the flavors this final course evoked.
Even though the emotions she tasted were not as sharp or strong as those of her wives, she relished every moment, Agatha was in heaven.
A little while later the First Secretary of the Terran Federation Consulate of Dau had collected the dishes from the empty dining room, she happily washed, dried and put up every one of them. At the same time her other Hand was sharing the couch-pit with the Dauzakai Ambassador.
They were having a detailed conversation about how Agatha could implant Dau wetware into any Child of Dau; no surgery, no recovery...just a learning curve.
Anyone who was from Dau, of any species, was open to Agatha's offer: Daurazu, Dauchazi, and Dauzakai: including Miku.
In reality Agatha could make this offer because those species were crafted by a Starchild. Agatha couldn't explain that to Zess, not at this time, perhaps never. Zess and Agatha then made immediate plans for a summit of sorts: a conference of siblings.
Joon found Kevin hilarious. The Bract secretary was directly under Larry, who was the next rung of the ladder in the Conglomerate. Kevin was quick witted and had a great sense of humor, his social skills were several steps above Elvis'.
During the interview with Deirdre's crew, Joon's position was revealed and Kevin did not miss a beat; Joon was now referred to as 'Excellency'.
After the myriad of questions, Kevin, who was being very candid, strongly indicated Larry would most likely kick the request further upstairs.
Joon glanced at Paula who nodded.
Kevin thanked them for their time and patience then departed.
"I really like Kevin, he is sharp." Joon commented.
Vika smiled, "Kevin would make a good Magistrate"
Paula and Astrid agreed.
"So we're not going to go meet with this... Larry fellow?" Max asked, eyebrows raised.
Paula smiled, "Probably not, Kevin indicated that Joon's position changed circumstances, but we shall see."
Joon bit her lip, "What do you think Larry will do?"
Vika responded, "If I were to make an assessment, I would say that Larry is not sufficiently senior in the management ranks to approve. If he oversteps his authority he risks a penalty."
Paula smiled, "Hopefully, we won't have too long a wait to find out."
The crew sat as the minutes crawled by. Astrid and Paula had both brought their portfolio datapads and were scrolling through the Depot's holo-net. It was a pale shadow of what Dau offered, but it was more than enough to pass the time.
"Oooh!" Astrid said excitedly, "They have an outlet district!"
Vika nodded, "Better prices than the Bazaar."
Samira perked up, "Any fabric outlets?"
Joon and Max shared a smile.
"Oh, there's even a metalwork district." Astrid made a little squeal. "I can get more mats for my fabricator!"
Max raised an eyebrow at Joon.
Joon smiled, "Max, darling, would you mind taking the kids to the mall?" Her accent had changed to a posh Jericho stereotype.
Everyone giggled while Astrid and Samira looked hopeful.
"Of course not, my love, but I don't want to leave you here all by your lonesome." Max replied in the same syrupy sweet accent.
"I will not leave her side." Agatha stated.
Paula nodded, "Me too."
Joon smiled, "See? I have bodyguards and a keeper, I'm all good."
Giggles again.
"Okay. Let's go get lost." Max grinned. Astrid, Samira and Vika all cheered as Max winked at Joon while half the crew stood up from the table.
*Keep in touch, Beautiful.*
Max tapped her own temple.
Agatha faithfully relayed the message instantaneously.
Joon beamed,
*Back at you, Gorgeous.*
Teffa's yellow eyes were narrowed, she was coiled down at the kitchen door reading the file Agatha had on Durx. She viewed it on her new portfolio datapad she had received from Agatha when she accepted the position of Major-domo.
In the kitchen, Lakita was washing up after dinner which was simple but savory and delicious. Lakita made enough for two Largath, it fed herself, five of her friends, and one other. Agatha did not elaborate on the other, and Lakita didn't press her about it. She shared the meal with Teffa and four Hands of Agatha.
Vika had explained Agatha to Lakita before they had even met, months ago so Lakita didn't blink an eye at the four Hands.
There were four small, delicate chairs at the table. No piece of furniture in the building could support her mass, save the reinforced couch in the common room. Lakita took it in stride and not unlike every Slarmian on Staverka, she knelt at the table.
Agatha conversed in Trade speech at dinner, so Lakita switched gears. Lakita didn't mind trade speech at all, but there were some things there just weren't words for. Agatha told her that Slarmian and Terran were the two languages used most in the Consulate.
Learning them would be a priority, Agatha winked at Teffa who also needed to practice her Terran. Teffa brought up Lakita's traditional kilt, she thought it charming. Lakita had only two outfits, her 'good' kilt and her everyday one.
She was still wearing her good kilt as Lakita wanted to make a positive impression.
Teffa asked if she wanted to expand her wardrobe and Lakita was enthusiastic, as with most females she knew, she liked clothes. Agatha agreed, saying it was perfectly acceptable to expand Lakita's apparel options.
Lakita eased the cleaned stewpot she had used for dinner onto the drying rack. She didn't think she would break anything, but she didn't want to chance it. With her side eye she had been watching Teffa reading her datapad.
Most other species underestimated the width of Largath vision.
Her four eyes were all the same, a gentle dark brown. Unlike most sentient species, Largath did not evolve as predators and their placement gave Lakita only a small blind spot directly behind her.
They were omnivorous opportunists, though the bulk of a Largaths diet consisted of vegetable matter, small predators were common on Larga, some big ones too; so having wide vision was very handy.
Lakita dried her massive paws on a small dish cloth and noticed Teffa seemed completely engrossed in what she was reading. Lakita didn't want to interrupt her, but because Teffa was seated at the doorway, Largath was kinda stuck in the kitchen.
"Wot yoo reddin, Teffa?" Lakita asked softly.
Teffa didn't respond.
Lakita smirked. The Largath cleared her throat... Teffa looked startled.
"Ah... Yoo finich, Lakita?" Teffa blinked rappidly.
"Lakita, finich." She replied.
"Demmit gon set innit komin rum?" Teffa smiled.
Lakita smiled and nodded, following Teffa into the common room. The Largath very gently eased her bulk into the sturdy couch, loaded with Slarmian and Terran language primers supplied by Agatha, her oversized datapad in hand.
Teffa bit her lip looking at the small space next to Lakita.
Lakita pouted, then nodded, "Yoo kin layet un Lakita, Teffa... Ef yoo wan, Lakita dun mien."
Teffa smiled with a crooked grin, then nodded to Lakita. The Slarmian slipped into the small space, then rolled her coils across Lakita's lap.
"Dat gud, Teffa?" The Largath inquired.
"Yus... Tanku, Lakita." Teffa smiled.
Teffa discovered something few Slarmian knew, Largath were toasty warm all the time. Lakita's body heat felt really good: the smile on Teffa's face did not diminish.
"Wot yoo reddin, Teffa?" Lakita asked softly.
Teffa looked up at Lakita, "Desim fiyel onnit Slarmisk Teffa kurisibot."
"Aya?" Lakita blinked her four eyes, "Dem Slarmisk es gud Lubik?"
Teffa jaw dropped, Lakita just assumed Teffa needed sex.
"Howit yoo es duza, Teffa neddit Lubik, Lakita?"
Lakita grinned, "Dunnit allum neddit Lubik, Teffa?"
Teffa blinked, Largath society must be much more open about such things.
"Mebe, Lakita, mebe." Teffa smiled.
The two ladies settled into their datapads and expanded horizons.
Max walked along holding Vika's tiny hand with Astrid and Samira behind them. Vika knew where she was going so Max didn't mind letting her take the lead. They found a service elevator to the outlet mall; there were no signs or adverts for it. It felt like a secret place that everyone who knew about it didn't mention it.
One of the biggest draws to Major Bract Depots for merchants was the outlet malls. It was a place where products could be purchased by merchants for resale. Manufacturers were not always involved in sales, merchants rarely manufactured their own products, these Outlets were where the two often did business.
Even though Bract did manufacture some goods, the Outlet malls allowed them and others access to a much broader variety. The mall itself was wedged between the two layers of docks. It was bare bones storage and presentation: the mall felt undeveloped and raw.
Max could see Joon spending a lot of time here, It could be good or bad depending on how things went with her mission.
While they walked down the dimly lit corridors they saw merchants of various species haggling with each other. Vika explained that very good deals could be made here, depending on who was selling what.
Even though the Slarmian Bazaar had pretty much everything, It was orchestrated more for consumers, and the prices were always higher.
Soon Astrid and Samira were leading the excursion, like two bees going flower to flower. Vika's stature was a disadvantage in this instance so Max asked if she wanted to be carried. The starry look in Vika's eyes prompted Max to pick her up and carry her on Max's hip. It felt natural, pleasant even, Max shared a loving look with her smallest wife.
"You like being carried." Max half asked, half confirmed.
Vika nodded, "I used to ride on Logo's shoulders, but your shoulders are not quite that big."
Max giggled.
"I like this too, it feels good." Vika smiled, her legs were hanging free on either side of Max's hip.
Max blinked, "Oh!"
"It won't bring me to a climax." Vika bit her lip.
Max swallowed and nodded.
"Over here!" Astrid shouted to Samira. Astrid pointed down the Aisle at an open bay on the left. Samria peered, she saw bolts of cloth on a dolly.
"Good eyes, Asa-chan!" Samira beamed a smile. Astrid and Samira scampered ahead, Max and Vika followed at a slower pace. The gentle sway of Max's hips as she walked gave Vika gentle stimulation.
Astrid and Samira looked at the bolts of cloth on the dolly, the interior of the bay was lined with long yards of hundreds of different fabrics. Samira beamed and Astrid bounced as they were approached by the Skerawk managing the bay.
The magnificent silver plumed being was very tall, lithe, and graceful. Brilliant crimson eyes peered at them intelligently. Like all Skerawk the manager's sex was all but impossible to discern.
"Griitings Tirrans, may I intirist you in thi finist fabrics in thi Minir Impirs?"
Astrid blinked, Samira pieced the heavily accented sales pitch together quickly.
"Yes," Samira nodded.
"Do you have a grey soft linen, like this?" The cyborg pulled up the hem of her tabard.
The manager reached out and gingerly felt the tabard between its long thin taloned digits. Its arms were similar to their legs, movements shifted two folded wings on their feathered back "Giv mi a momint to sii what I hav in thi back." The Skerawk nodded. It turned and sashayed into the back.
Astrid and Samira had never been that close to a Skerawk before and they watched the manager walk away. Long scaly toes tapered into several straight talons, the Skerawk kept them together as it walked, giving a graceful flow to the gait. A single spur came down from an elegant ankle, giving the impression that it was wearing spiked heels.
"Wow..." Astrid shared a look with Samira.
Samira nodded, "They look amazing."
Max stepped in with Vika on her hip, "So how's it going?"
Samira smiled, "The manager is looking in the back."
"Very cool looking manager." Astrid commented.
Vika nodded, "Yes, Skerawk look cool."
"I didn't know they were so tall, and graceful." Astrid smiled.
Max peered down the length of the bay, The manager in question had disappeared into the forest of stock.
"What are you looking for?" Max asked
Samira nodded, "More tabard material."
Vika smiled, "She has it, this is where I got it."
Samira, Astrid and Max all stared at Vika.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Samira blinked.
Vika shrugged, "You didn't ask."
Samira giggled, "Okay, you have a point."
Astrid and Max shared a smile.
"So how do you know the manager is female?" Astrid asked Vika softly.
Vika smirked, "I asked."
Astrid giggled, "Oh, I guess that works too huh?"
Vika nodded, "It usually does."
The Skerawk manager reemerged from the stock room of the cloth outlet.
She was pushing a dolly with three bolts of a familiar grey linen.
When she got closer the manager called out, "Iya... I Rimimbir you..."
Vika smiled, waving from Max's hip.
The manager stopped the dolly close to the group of Terrans. "I thought I ricognizd that linin." She said looking at Vika.
"Hello again, how is business?" Vika asked, smiling at the Skerawk.
"Bisniz is good, I am hoping for a sail hir." The manager giggled.
Vika chuckled, "I think that is likely."
Max got a good look at the Skerawk, she was indeed very tall, well over seven feet. She wore a dark blue apron, her plumage was in various shades of silvery-grey, her long beak was dark brown fading to a deep umber at the tip. Her expressive eyes were a beautiful crimson. Most of her bulk was shrouded in feathers, Max suspected she weighed less than Joon.
Her legs were incredibly thin, her movements were delicate and graceful.
"I hav thri bolts, twintytwo hundrid iich, but for you, twinty hundrid." She offered.
Vika nodded, "That is a very good deal, thank you."
Max happily paid for the three bolts.
The dolly the bolts were on belonged to the Depot, so Deirdre's crew could make use of it all over, while they were there. Everyone thanked the Skerawk and she thanked them in return and waved goodbye. The four Terrans departed together very pleased and chatting about the purchase.
It didn't take long for Astrid and Samira to renew their frenzied search.
The two Chiefs continued on their exciting adventures in the outlet mall.
Max switched Vika to her other hip.
They shared a smile as Max casually followed.
Joon passed the time people-watching. Being bored was unreasonable, so Joon found ways to entertain herself while Paula was browsing the local net on her datapad. Joon didn't bring one, so she just watched the various examples of Minor Empire travelers and merchants filter into the visitors center.
Elvis was helping two Elmoq, the mollusk-like sentients were fascinating, they resembled a slug wearing clam shells. They first appeared to be identical, but differences became apparent while they interacted with the Bract attendant.
One of the Elmoq was obviously superior in rank or position to the other, but it was the subordinate doing all the interaction giving the impression that Elvis was beneath them. Joon realized she shouldn't jump to conclusions, but it was interesting.
After the Elmoq concluded with signing in, Joon saw the superior praise the subordinate... It had been a teaching moment. Joon was glad her initial read had been false, she realized it had been a teaching moment for her as well.
"How many ships go through here in a day?" Joon asked out loud.
Paula replied without looking up from her datapad, "Between two and three hundred in a thirty hour cycle. Those kinds of statistics are available on the local net, but they are rough metrics, nothing very specific or conclusive." Paula concluded.
Joon pursed her lips in thought, "No information on specific ships?"
Paula looked up from her data-pad, "What are you looking for, M'lady?"
Joon shook her head, "I was curious how hard that kind of data was to get from just the local net."
Paula turned her head to look at Agatha.
Agatha smirked, she leaned over to Joon and reported softly, "I have already penetrated the firewalls, I have complete access to non-secured information on the Depot."
Joon nodded, "Good, just don't trip any alarms."
Agatha bowed slightly, "Yes, Mistress."
Joon watched the two Elmoq slither away. At least she wasn't bored.
The outlet excursion was proceeding well, Max thought. Luckily Samira and Astrid were more into finding things than buying them. All manner of interesting and exotic products had been discovered and shared and Vika was helpful in explaining what some of them were.
A number had no applications for the Terrans, most of those were grooming products for different biologic systems. Some were just low-tech from the Terran point of view.
Max made sure Samira and Astrid realized that many of the nations in the ME were not wealthy ones, and those low-tech items were greatly valued. Samira and Astrid nodded in understanding.
Vika said that Logo did very well selling those products without gouging the consumers purchasing them. In return it allowed those customers to become regulars, and expand their wants and needs to higher-tech products.
Astrid blushed, saying she should have known that; she did have a degree in business after all.
Vika winked at her.
Later Max found a bench in an open space near a tiny snack bar. Vika got them both a kind of gelato that Vika liked. It was green and blue and tasted like salted caramel. The treat was tasty and Max finished it off in minutes.
Samira and Astrid had continued their treasure hunt while Max and Vika took a break but Max could see them both far down the corridor. They were getting close to the fabrication quarter, where outlets had a more industrial selection. Max watched Samira and Astrid as they were conferring in the middle of the corridor then Samira looked at Max with a worried expression.
Max raised an eyebrow at Samira and she motioned with her hand for Max to come over.
"Vika..." Max started, but Vika had already jumped off the bench heading to Samira.
Max followed.
When Max got closer they saw that Astrid was just standing there looking at a sign above a bay. Her face was blank, like she was daydreaming. "Astrid, are you okay?" Max asked, then looked at Samira.
Samira still looked worried, "She's done this before, I think it has something to do with Ability Discovery.
Max stood next to Astrid and looked up at the sign. It was a simple sign for the metal outlet they were standing in front of. Three shapes, a pyramid in gold, a sphere in silver and a cube in copper.
Samira turned and looked at the sign. "Oh..." Samira said out loud, "This could be more pieces for her puzzle."
Max peered at Samira, "What puzzle, Sam?"
Samira shared the look with Max, "Sorcery."
Agatha's changing stance was the first sign Joon was about to have company.
*Incoming, Mistress*
Joon changed her focus from people-watching to the Bract ambling into the waiting area. This Bract didn't carry a datapad, he also moved slower than expected. Joon noticed Paula was still buried in her portfolio. "Paula." Joon said under her breath.
The Lieutenant glanced up as Joon shifted her eyes to the incoming visitor. Paula quickly turned in her seat and stood. Joon remained seated and watched the Bract approach.
"Your Excellency, my apologies for keeping you waiting, I have only just heard of your presence here."
Joon blinked, the Bract was exceptionally well spoken, with a soft Terran accent.
"My name is Tom, I am the Assistant Manager of this Depot, it is a pleasure to welcome you."
*Here we go... Let Max know we've finally got some action.*
*Yes, Mistress.*
"Thank you, most kindly for the welcome, Tom." Joon replied with a soft smile.
Tom gave a short bow, "If you would, please join me in walking to the Manager's office."
Joon glanced at Paula, who subtly nodded.
"Of course, Tom, I would be happy to." Joon smiled genuinely. Agatha held out a hand to assist Joon to stand and when Joon got to her feet she realized Tom was a bit taller than Elvis or Kevin.
*Is Tom larger than other Bract, or am I imagining it?*
*You are correct, Tom is approximately twenty percent larger than the other examples of Bract we have met.*
*Ask Max to see if Vika has a reason for it.*
*Yes, Mistress.*
Joon hadn't expected this kind of welcome at this point, but on reflection it did make sense. It did escalate quickly though; going from datawork one moment to meeting the top Administrator the next.
Joon suddenly had a greater appreciation for datawork.
*Max says, Vika only knows Bract to be one size, color and shape.*
*Thank you.*
*Yes, Mistress.*
*This could mean we are seeing things behind the curtain.*
*Yes, Mistress... It does appear so.*
Tom walked next to Joon leading the group through a wide hallway adjacent to the visitor center. Paula walked behind her Ambassador, Agatha brought up the rear walking side to side.
While they walked Tom made small talk.
Joon was congenial but both she and Tom knew it was just small talk.
Tom knew a little about Joon, it seemed he was briefed on her position concerning Staverka.
No one knew Joon was the designated diplomat for the entire ME.
Which was perfectly acceptable, Joon was content in holding that card in reserve.
* Hey Ag's? *
* Yes, Mistress?*
*Did you happen to mention my promotion to Zess?*
* I have not, Mistress, did you want me to? *
* Not yet, but if I mention it to anyone here, go ahead and inform Teffa, Zess and Crinx.*
*Yes, Mistress.*
Joon smiled to herself as the small group made their way further and further into the offices of Depot zero three.
It was a long walk and at some point the offices disappeared completely.
*Mistress...*
*Yea?*
*We have left the Depot docks*
* What do you mean?*
* We are entering one of the asteroids.*
The group traveled down a very long well lit hallway, it had interesting framed pictures of rainbows from everywhere.
*This is a little weird, Ag's*
* I cannot dispute that, Mistress.*
The long hallway ended in double doors, the well lit corridor opened into a darker foyer.
*I am sensing a huge number.*
*Huge number?*
Tom opened large double doors leading them into a dark walled office.
*Yes, a huge number of Bract... In the asteroids.*
*Oh fuck... What does that mean?*
Astrid felt weird.
Like she was dreaming. Her thoughts were full of electrons, neutrons and protons. She saw gold, silver and copper...
Then it all came together, slowly the puzzle pieces fit together. Tiny individual clues locking together as a larger picture took form. When the last piece clicked into place, Astrid knew what she needed. Astrid inhaled deeply and her lavender eyes blinked rapidly.
"Are you okay, Asa-chan?" Samira asked, she was holding Astrid's hand.
"Do you need some water, or something to eat?" Max inquired with a worried look on her face.
Astrid smiled, "No, no, I'm fine... But, I need to go in there."
She indicated the metal outlet.
Samira glanced at the interior of the bay.
Max nodded, "Sure, Astrid, let's go in."
The four Terrans walked into the bay, Max noted the various pallets of sheet metal and stacks of metal ingots. An Ornalith watched them from his oddly shaped chair behind a low desk in the corner.
He sighed and got up, making his way over to them.
"Haloo." He called out.
Astrid turned to him, "Do you have Gold, Silver and Copper?"
Max and Samira shared a look.
The Ornalith blinked, his trilateral body seemed to stiffen.
"I might, I don't usually have Gold just laying around." He replied in very passable Terran.
Max gently rested a hand on Astrid's shoulder, "Don't be rude, Astrid, there's no need to rush.
Astrid blinked, "Oh, right, sorry. I am interested in purchasing Gold, Silver and Copper.
"Alright, I think we can do business." The Ornalith nodded.
*Max, Joon says we are finally getting some action.*
*Great!*
"How much are we talking about, approximately?" The Ornalith folded two of his arms leaning against his low comdesk.
Astrid paused in thought, " As much as I can get, I'm going to need them in equal by volume amounts."
The attendants eyes narrowed
"Equa... Alright... I will check on how much gold I have in stock, but I advise you, it isn't cheap... Even here." The Ornalith metal outlet attendant advised.
Astrid nodded, "I can handle it."
The Ornalith nodded then went off into the back.
Vika searched Astrid's face.
"What do you mean you can handle it?" Max asked, "We don't have an unlimited budget, Astrid."
Astrid turned to look at Max, "I know... I have my own money."
Max nodded in understanding, "Okay, I won't get in your way."
Astrid's face softened, "I know this is weird, Max, but I need to do this."
"No, I get it... I'll help you any way I can." Max replied.
A brief group-hug occurred.
Astrid and Max nodded to each other.
*Max?*
Agatha's voice penetrated Max's thoughts.
*Yes?*
*Joon would like you to ask Vika about larger sized Bract.*
Max blinked.
She looked down at Vika.
"What do you know about bracts that are larger in size?" Max asked her diminutive wife.
Vika raised her arms.
Max smirked, reaching down and lifting her up to her hip.
Vika settled in, "I don't know about 'larger' Bract, I only know them to be one size, one color and one shape."
*Vika only knows Bract to be one size, color and shape.*
*Thank you, Max.*
*Sure thing.*
Max wondered what that was about.
Vika smiled, Max winked at her.
The Ornalith ambled back out, he looked up at Astrid.
"I can get three hundred and thirty cubic centimeters of each..."
Before he could finish Astrid replied... "I'll buy it."
Max blinked.
Samira's jaw dropped.
The Ornalith paused, looking skeptical, "Can you afford that?"
Astrid nodded, her face quite serious. "I can... Let us continue."
Vika raised an eyebrow.
Max and Samira once again shared an uncomfortable look.
The Ornalith nodded to Astrid and tapped his comdesk to life.
Astrid opened her portfolio datapad and in a few moments the metal outlet attendant had made two point six million credits, and Astrid now owned a substantial amount of Gold, Silver and Copper.
"I can have your order ready in about an hour." The Ornalith smiled.
Astrid saw the Ornaliths sideways smile and smiled in return.
"Thank you, Nef, you have my contact information, and I have yours. We may be doing business again in the future."
The Ornalith shook Astrids offered hand, "I look forward to it, Ms. Komatzu."
After business was concluded Astrid looked more relaxed.
She spun around on her toes, laced her hand into one of Samira's and led the way.
Max, with Vika still on her hip, followed Samira and Astrid out of the metal outlet.
"How do you have so much money, Astrid?" Samira asked quietly just within Max's earshot.
Astrid smiled softly, "I'm a Komatzu, Sam... I inherited it."
Samira's eyes were huge. So were Max's.
"I'm no Henry Voss, But I never 'needed' to become an Engineer, I wanted to." Astrid concluded with a nod.
Max now understood why Astrid's life involved arrangements and constant management from her mother. It didn't excuse it, but it did explain it.
Tom lead Joon and her entourage into a cavernous office space: Literally. The beautifully appointed office was carved from the bare rock. The polished walls sparkled with swirls of muted patterns. It still managed to have expensive decorations everywhere, but the space was an actual cave.
*Where, how many?*
*It is difficult to tell, the rock interferes with my empathic sense.*
*Estimate.*
Joon clarified.
*Fifty thousand in just this asteroid.*
*Holy shit.*
The group climbed an incline into an area with a massive view. A heavy, perfectly transparent wall showed the vast expanse of dust and rocks. Joon finally noticed a grand comdesk of polished stone next to the far wall, and the Bract sitting behind it.
Joon had never seen anything like them, they resembled an average Bract in proportion; but the similarities stopped there.
"Thank you, Tom, I can introduce myself." The deep, well modulated voice projected.
Tom didn't say a word, but gave a short bow, just like he had given Joon, then departed. The Bract behind the desk appeared to be resting on some manner of seat, but it was hard to tell.
"Ambassador Smith, it is a pleasure to meet you, I was wondering if it would ever happen."
"My name is Bob, I am the General Manager of Depot Zero Three."
Bob was bigger than Tom, by a lot... His shell wasn't a dark brown, but a glossy black with a green metallic sheen. The carapace wasn't uniformly smooth but sported edges and spikes, his multifaceted eyes were space black and absorbing.
"Thank you, Bob, for seeing me." Joon nodded to the large Bract. "Please call me Jooniper."
Bob nodded, "Jooniper, I had always hoped Terra would take us more seriously, but they allowed commercial interests to dictate policy."
Joon blinked, "And you don't?"
"Business is business...Death is not a good business." Bob answered softly.
"The Kirrix do not believe in mutual benefits, they are parasitic at best, predacious at worst."
Joon nodded, "No argument."
Bob nodded again, "Half of the Corporations within the Terran Federation also fit that description.
Joon nodded again, "I completely agree."
"Fascinating, should I assume you have no direct corporate ties, other than Ms. Komatsu?" The metallic green Bract waited for Joon's response.
*I thought Astrid quit Voss.*
*She did, but she is a Komatzu.*
*What the fuck does that mean?*
*She owns shares of Komatzu Industries, a noteworthy percentage.*
*Holy shit, when did this happen?*
*As far as I know since her birth, she and her Aunt Yumi are the last two of the Komatzu line.*
"You're right, Astrid is part of my staff, but I hired her because she is an excellent Engineer and Holo-producer." Joon answered with some quick thinking, preventing the silence from birthing kittens.
"Those efforts have made a spectacular impression on Staverka and with the Dau." Bob tapped up tiny holographic stills of 'Zeralyst fuge' and 'Nothing Else Matters'.
Joon nodded, "Yes, I value the relationship I have developed with both nations."
"I find your presence on Depot Zero Three... Encouraging." The large Bract's antennae hummed softly.
"I would like to open relations with the Bract Conglomerate in the Terran Federation's name." Joon replied honestly.
"No corporate representation?" Bob asked.
Joon shook her head slightly, "No, just one nation to another."
"Do you have that authority?" The Bract asked, tilting his head.
"I am the Terran Federation Special Envoy to the Minor Empires." Joon stated with conviction.
Bob did not react for a few moments, it felt like an hour.
"I would be very pleased to bring your proposal to the Board of Directors, In fact, I am honored to do so." Bob's antennae hummed with his response.
Some time later Joon found herself in the exact same seat in the waiting area just adjacent to the visitor's center. This time she had an open data pad and a cup of hot tea in front of her. The datapad had the holosite for Komatzu Industries up and a holovid of the sturdy utilitarian line of construction, mining and cargo ships on display.
"It's my family's legacy, but we haven't been directly involved with it for generations."
Astrid's voice seemed distant, Joon needed tea. Joon sipped at the nicely warm tea. The results were instantaneous, It felt amazing. She looked up at her family.
"What happened?" Joon asked.
Max nodded to Paula
Paula went over the last few minutes of the meeting and current events.
Joon stared at Paula's full sexy lips as she listened.
"Bob is going to sponsor your proposal to the Bract Conglomerate's Board of Directors. You thanked Bob most graciously and said you would stay on Depot 03 as long as it took. The Board meeting is scheduled for about twelve hours from now. Max said you needed electrolytes, thus the tea."
Joon drained the cup, "More tea please."
Everyone giggled, and Max set a full teacup in front of Joon.
"She said you would go through a few cups." Paula grinned.
"Did I really almost fuck up the negotiations?" Astrid pouted.
Joon looked at Astrid, "Not really, but it would have been better if I knew about it ahead of time."
"I am so sorry, Joon, I had no idea I would trip up things." Astrid's face crumpled.
"Shhh, it's okay Asa-chan," Joon hugged her, "It all worked out."
"Astrid made a new friend down at the mall." Samira smiled at her favorite Engineer.
Joon blinked, peering at Astrid, "What did you do?"
Astrid bit her lip, "I may have spent some money."
"Some." Vika scoffed.
Joon raised an eyebrow, "How much?"
"Two point six." Astrid said... Joon's eyebrows rose.
"Million?" Joon finished.
Astrid was bright red, "Yes."
"Did you buy a house on Depot three?" Joon asked incredulously.
Astrid shook her head embarrassed.
Joon looked at Sam
"She bought Gold." Sam replied, "Over six Kilos of Gold."
"And silver and copper." Astrid said softly.
Sam smooched Astrid's cheek, "And silver... And copper."
"We are due to pick it up in about thirty minutes." Max replied.
Joon lifted Astrid's chin, looking into her almond shaped lavender eyes, "Are you going to tell me what the metal is for?"
Samira smiled.
Astrid nodded and softly replied, "Sorcery."
Agatha advised that she was making the day shift food on the Deirdre. It was well past dinner time and everyone was feeling peckish.
They made their way back down to the mall to pick up Astrid's order. Joon, Paula and Agatha got a good feel for the mall and Max knew that Joon, once introduced to the outlet mall, would need to return for more.
Joon complained about appetizers without an ensuing meal and Agatha reissued her statement about making dinner.
Everyone giggled.
As the crew approached the metal outlet, Max saw two of the Largath security standing outside of it.
Max shared a look with Vika, who was again riding her hip.
"I wonder what that means." Samira said out loud as she noticed them far down the aisle.
Everyone was made aware of the security. Agatha stared off for a moment, "They were requested by someone named Nef."
Astrid looked at Agatha, "That is the attendant, perhaps it is precautionary?"
Samira nodded, "That is wise."
Joon was flanked by the two Hands of Agatha, still vigilant in her bodyguard role. Samira did similar with Astrid while Paula and Max, carrying Vika, followed behind them. The family stayed outside while Astrid and Samira went in.
The two Largath didn't react to the small gathering, but definitely watched every move they made. Minutes passed as one of the Largath seemed to briefly stare at Vika. Vika nodded to him, and he nodded in return. He didn't react more than that, a testament to his training and professionalism.
Then simultaneously the security touched their earbuds as Astrid came out with Samira behind her pushing a dolly loaded with three small crates. Nef stood in the open entrance to the metal outlet and nodded to the security.
Astrid gave Nef a handshake then stood next to Samira as the two Largath took flanking positions on either side of the dolly Samira was pushing.
Joon shared a look with Max.
*It appears we have an escort.*
Max smiled,
*I'm okay with that.*
This time Agatha took point, followed by Samira pushing the dolly and the two Largath, followed by the rest of the family and 'Una' bringing up the rear. The closest freight lift was only a few minutes walk, but the level of anxiety on the way there was palpable.
The elevator ride was uneventful, though it did dramatically illustrate just how big Largath were and how powerful the freight lift was. Max got a good long look at the security guards and their equipment. It appeared this was not either of the Largath's first time filling this particular function, they were silent and intimately aware of their much smaller charges.
The equipment was military grade, upsized for the Largath and very durably made. Even the head gear was designed for them, allowing for a particularly wide field of vision.
The firearms were a wicked design, twin-barreled autoloading dual feed, with a fifty-round box magazine.
Max could only imagine what kind of effect an auto-shotgun of that design was capable of, it was frightening and encouraging at the same time.
Vika was also silent. She seemed to be weighing and measuring the Largath's performance, like a senior prefect gauging new students. The lift stopped and the doors opened: Agatha held up her fist and everyone froze.
Agatha stepped out alone and walked a dozen steps onto the docks, her eyes sweeping the mostly empty concourse as everyone held their collective breath.
Agatha gave the proceed hand signal, and a single Largath stepped out... followed by Samira pushing the dolly.
By the time the lift was empty they were back in formation heading to the walkway.
*That was smartly done... Did you coordinate with security?*
Max asked Agatha.
*No, Just followed GSD protocol, our escort has been exhibiting that, so I took a chance.*
*I think it paid off handsomely, and felt smooth.*
Max looked at Vika, she had a slight smile of pride.
Deirdre was just about at the opposite side of the massive docks from their current location, the walkway ran parallel in both directions along its length. It was going to be at least a twenty minute ride, but it was better than walking.
A similar defensive configuration evolved for the walkway, this time Astrid stood next to Samira to make light conversation. Joon and Paula also chatted, but everyone else just watched.
*Kind of nerve-wracking.*
Max commented mentally.
*Welcome to security.*
Agatha replied.
Most merchants in the ME accepted criminal elements as a price for doing business. Bract did not, their philosophy was simple, play by our rules, or we completely exclude you. That kind of hard policy might reduce some opportunities for the Bract. But legitimate ME merchants and manufacturers swarmed to the Depots like moths to a flame.
Max knew there was no way to completely eliminate criminal activity, even on the Depot, but sometimes just having an institution you could trust to have your best interest at heart made a substantial difference.
Thankfully the walkway ride turned out to be boring.
Security escorted their charges right up to Deirdre's berthing. Astrid, through the local net, gave an outstanding rating for the escort to Depot Administration. Thanking them for the service, she added exceptional gratuity for the individual security guards themselves. Vika said something to the two Largath before they left, Max didn't know what she said, but they both beamed broadly, showing huge incisors.
Astrid put the three cases full of her purchases in Engineering, she wanted to dive into them, but she was also starving and Samira stowed the three bolts of soft grey linen in storage. Vika promised she would show Samira where in the Bazaar she had the tabard made and everyone dressed down and washed up for dinner.
As late as it was, they needed food then some well earned sleep.
Agatha produced a magnificent meal for her family: she started them with Silky Shrimp Bisque with Sherry, then added Xoriatiki Greek Salad. Agatha then set out the main dish, A Seven Cheese Spinach and Mushroom Lasagna.
She finished with a Classic Tiramisu for dessert.
During the courses she felt the delight of her family enjoying the flavors and textures. After every course her family praised her skill and proficiency.
Agatha cleared the table and set out fresh baked shortbread with tea and coffee and she reveled in the fact the family looked and felt immensely satisfied.
Max took a moment to study each of her wives during after-dinner tea. Joon put out her hand to Max.
"It's been an interesting day." Joon said, her eyes saying more than her words.
Max nodded, "Let's start our family meeting then."
A single representative of Agatha sat between Vika and Samira facing Max and Joon across the table.
"Where to begin?" Joon asked.
"The Bract?" Paula suggested, "I got a feeling you and Agatha learned much more than you alluded to after our climb up the Conglomerate ladder."
Joon nodded, "We did, or I should say, Agatha did."
Paula nodded in understanding, "I look forward to being part of the family telepathy network."
Joon nodded, "Which reminds me, we will be restarting the 'Smoothie Queue' tomorrow for just that reason.
Astrid, Vika and Samira all smiled.
Paula pouted briefly, but quickly nodded in agreement.
"Agatha, if you would give a summary of what we discovered?" Joon requested.
The Deirdre's crew sipped hot beverages and paid attention to their most exotic wife. Agatha stood, she began her report with the differing levels of security found on the local net. Essentially there were three different levels of data on the Depot.
Entry level included all basic transient activity, for all merchants and manufacturers. Security level included the general functionality of the Depot and it's many subroutines. Including but not limited to, Ship construction, Health and Safety and finally Law Enforcement.
Then there is the Administration level, which thus far has eluded my efforts to penetrate it without alerting the Depot.
Samira shared a look with Max who nodded, they were edging close to illegality.
Vika sipped her tea, her eyes not focused on anyone, thinking.
Joon, Astrid and Paula listened closely as Agatha continued, "There seems to be a generational hierarchy within the Bract species. Tom, the Assistant Manager, looks very similar to the average Bract, but is somewhat larger. The General Manager of Depot Zero Three, Bob, is more than fifty percent larger than an average Bract, and physically differs in many ways."
"Carapace shell color of Black with a Green Metallic sheen, edged ridges and carapace spikes of the same coloration. These differences may only be cosmetic, but I suggest they are a result of another life stage."
Max nodded, "Please clarify."
Agatha nodded, "I propose that the Bract commonly seen in known space are merely a step in the life cycle, perhaps a post larval but still immature step. This may be why rules are so important to the Conglomerate, to keep a less mature personality on track, so to speak."
Agatha sat while the table discussed her proposal.
Vika nodded, "Yes."
Max and Joon looked at Vika.
"Without those rules, I think Bract are less focused: even the best Captains constantly refer to those rules."
Joon smirked, "Common Bract are a bunch of...Teenagers?"
The table filled with giggles.
Vika smiled, "Perhaps, yes. I believe they might depend on that social structure."
Max pursed her lips, "So where are all of the Adults?"
"Maybe they are rare." Paula said softly, looking at nothing.
"Or it's by design." Astrid added, "Maturity may have it's own drawbacks."
Joon nodded, "Tom wasn't nearly as mobile as Kevin, and Bob didn't even get up from behind his desk."
Max thought about that while sipping her tea.
Samira smirked, "How do adults keep kids from trashing everything and getting themselves hurt?"
Everyone at the table said it at the same time... "Rules."
Vika blinked and Agatha felt the emotional spike and looked at her. Max saw the two and also looked, the rest felt the shift and gave Vika her moment. "I just realized what could be the prize for the Game Bract play." Vika said softly.
"Oh God." Astrid said.
Vika nodded to her, "If they are good enough, smart enough and lucky enough: they get to be adults."
Everyone took a few moments to let that sink in, sipping at hot drinks.
"Shitty prize." Astrid said softly.
Joon pursed her lips in thought, "We don't know that for certain, but we do know there are a lot more Bract than are walking around the Depot.
Max's eyebrows rose, "How many more?"
Agatha stood back up, "The asteroid that we entered at the center edge of the Depot crescent had approximately fifty thousand individuals."
"Fuckmuffins!" Astrid stared at Agatha.
Everyone nodded.
"Of the fifteen asteroids lining the outer edge of the Depot, there are four that are larger than that one. Taking into account the space available, on average, it allows enough room for three quarters of a million Bract at Depot Zero Three."
Almost nothing had gone the way Vika had dreamed it would today, it had happened occasionally before in the past, but nothing quite like this. She had to admit to herself that Agatha added so many variables that Vika just didn't see in her dreams.
Portent had been the way she kept herself and her family alive.
For a moment she felt helpless, but then she thought of Shadowstep.
Max had her beat, had her back against the wall, she had seen no way out from that loss; in her dreams. But, when it actually happened, Agatha had set up a way, Vika only had to find it.
Was her Portent useless now?
Vika wasn't sure. She wasn't ready to give up on it, but it felt less accurate right now, maybe, less sensitive. She could still feel weighty events on the horizon; but the smaller things became less tangible, like wisps of smoke.
Vika sat up in bed between Agatha and Paula as she stared at the wardrobe. Agatha quietly sat up next to her.
"Rough day?" Agatha whispered.
Vika nodded.
Agatha kissed her shoulder.
"Is there anything I can do?" Her question asked in that same whisper.
Vika turned to her and whispered, "I need to go for a walk: alone."
Agatha thought about that.
"I support you, Vika." Agatha replied softly.
Vika hugged her, and quietly got out of bed.
Vika quietly slipped out the portside airlock, keeping to the left side of the gantry.
She wore plain BDU's with a small belt pack, her dreads were wrapped and covered with a trimmed black sock, along with a particular visor. Vika was also swathed in nanoweave.
She had on the smallest set, it was still too large for her, but she made do. Vika wore nothing on her feet, but she did carry her sandal boots with her. She ducked behind the dolly still sitting at the end of the gantry that carried Astrid's purchase from the other side of the Depot.
Vika probably didn't need to, but why take the chance.
It was a moderately short walk across the width, but it wasn't empty of traffic. Bract Depots ran continuously, so the walkways did have a few occasional passengers. Agatha said she would cover Vika's progress until she was off the docks.
Vika was aware of how talented Agatha was, even without a cybernet connection.
Still she didn't dally, she quietly made her way all the way across to a service entrance, and it opened at her arrival. She slipped in and closed it quickly.
Vika was on her own from here: so she chose her route carefully. Ventilation.
The vent was at the top of the service passage, four meters above. The passage was narrow enough for her to hold herself aloft with her feet while in a split. Bract didn't alter standard construction, they didn't need to. Working on a Clipper for three years taught Vika how Bract made things. Simple, sturdy and modular.
Wuff...Vika Shadowstepped to the top of the service passage.
Short muscular legs held her above the floor, close to the vent cover. Vika produced one of the hand tools she still retained from her Clipper employment. The vent cover was the exact same model and size she was familiar with.
She eased the slats open, the pins squeaked softly. Normally Vika would never be able to open the vent and get in without assistance. Luckily she no longer needed to do that; Vika only needed to see the other side.
Wuff...She Shadowstepped into the ventilation duct.
Vika carefully eased the vent slats closed again as the blue vapor dissipated below her in the service room. She looked around, she was at the farthest end of the ventilation system, this might take a while.
Agatha watched closely as she felt Vika make her way across from the gantry to the service door. She couldn't actually see her, but Agatha knew exactly where Vika was. Agatha had helped Vika in a number of ways before her mission.
They had made an arrangement.
Unbeknownst to Vika, their entire family was privy to that arrangement. Agatha had alerted her wives to both Vika's despair and her desire to investigate. At first most of Vika's other spouses did not support her explorations. Her only ally in this was Joon. Who felt if anything, it might produce some real answers.
Joon's conviction won over Astrid and Paula.
Max and Samira felt reconnaissance at this point was reckless. Then Joon asked who could be better than Vika and when would be a more convenient time?
Max and Samira had no answer. So they agreed to support the venture. Any information Vika could get for them was better than what they had now so they had Agatha set Vika up with all the gear she would need, including every scrap of spy tech she thought would be helpful.
The arrangement between Agatha and Vika was not a violation of trust, not exactly. It was her family letting Vika explore new boundaries, just without her knowing they approved.
The way families sometimes do.
Working her way slowly at a steady but very quiet pace, Vika learned the layout of the Ventilation system. The visor was perfect for keeping track of the twists and turns in relation to the basic geometry of the Depot. After three hours of this steady but constant activity, Vika found one of the ventilation rooms. From there she was able to find a maintenance access to the support structure connecting one of the asteroids to the Depot.
Wuff... Shadowstep to the ventilation room floor through the service entrance.
Walking softly past life support, and: Dead end.
The service tunnel was retracted, and to tease her someone had thoughtfully put a little viewport so she could see the asteroid.
Now what, Vika thought to herself. She hadn't seen any of this, but here she was. Unless... Agatha had given her an answer for this too.
Vika just needed to find it, discover it.
She took a deep breath then sat down. Vika thought about slipping into a Hand of Agatha, being on Staverka, many light years away. How did that work? What did Agatha do so Vika could borrow a Hand? Was she really there?
Or was she only there in spirit?
Vika took a deep breath calming herself down, leaning back against the service tunnel. She decided to try and look at things with her mind's eye, the same way she did with Portent in her dreams.
Vika saw the service tunnel.
Well that didn't work, Vika was disappointed and she went to stand up.; but instead, floated up. Oh shit, gravity is out, was the first thing Vika thought. Then she looked down.
She saw a blurry outline sitting at the bottom of the tunnel. Vika lifted her hand in front of her face. A soft white barely visible translucent version of her hand came up. It had an eerie spectral quality to it.
Vika knew exactly what this was, she had heard Samira describe it several times. Shaman could separate spirit from body. She was experiencing a spiritwalk.
Agatha had given her an answer, it was up to Vika to find it.
Vika wanted to cheer. She again looked down at the blurry form. Vika tried to touch herself... her hand passed right through.
Look, no touch.
Still better than no look at all; but, if her spirit hand passed through her body...
Vika tried to touch the service tunnel wall. Her spirit hand went right through it, no touch, no resistance. Vika turned to look out the viewport. She saw the asteroid and the service tunnel coupling, maybe twenty meters away.
Vika willed herself forward...
She slipped right through the bulkhead into open space. This was the most scared and exhilarated Vika had ever been in her life, she absolutely loved it.
When Vika finally settled down, she thought about her mission.
She knew it was completely off script, but discovering spiritwalk was a massive boost to her ego. Vika willed herself to the asteroid and slipped past the matching coupling to the service tunnel.
She noticed that she saw things a little differently while Spiritwalking. Technology was dull, lifeless, even the bare rock was more vibrant. Vika thought she understood why, but seeing it was oddly disturbing. She floated along the service corridor until it opened into a life support monitoring room.
It had the exact layout like ones found on Clippers. There were two passages from there. Both were hewn from the bare rock. Vika examined the stone floor, it sparkled oddly, she wasn't sure why.
She followed the one to her left, it sparkled more. It shortly led to what felt like an office, or perhaps a small sitting room. The furniture was typical Bract design, there was also a terminal.
Suddenly a Bract walked into the room, Vika hadn't heard a sound. She floated up, right through the ceiling, through the rock. Vika finally found herself rising up into a storage room, or at least it seemed like the Spiritwalk didn't allow her to hear anything.
The Bract did not seem to see her though, so that was an advantage.
She went through the senses, no touch, no sound, no smell, no taste. Just look: one out of five wasn't much to work with, but she would try. Vika suddenly had a thought.
The one limitation for Shadowstep was she had to see where she was stepping to.
Spiritwalk allowed her to see, but nothing else.
She looked around the storage room, other than the rock walls, it looked pretty average. Vika went to the back corner, between some shelves filled with boxes. If she could breathe like this, she would have taken a deep breath.
Vika concentrated. Wuff...Vika dropped to the floor.
All of her muscles were on fire.
Her vision swirled and clouded with the pain.
She... Wouldn't... Scream.
If she screamed she would get caught. Vika really would have liked to, she had to find another way through this agony. She took deep breaths trying to slow her heart, calm herself down.
Her muscles were all cramped, and they would not let go.
Vika lay writhing on the floor in the back corner of the storage room. She just tried to relax, get control of the spasms. Vika could feel herself start to calm down, her muscles still hurt, but they began to unlock.
She blinked a few times.
The room seemed to be getting brighter. She blinked again. It was getting brighter, and it was a green glow. Vika froze as she heard someone gasp.
"Oh! hello." A melodic feminine voice said, "You're not supposed to be here."
